Biography
Aslı Yılmaztürk grew up in Istanbul and attended the prestigious Robert College, where her interest in visual culture and aesthetics developed early. She began Sabancı University studying economics but soon redirected her focus toward education and practice in visual design and communication.
From childhood she collected images from interior-design and fashion magazines, cutting and archiving visuals—an early sign of her future curatorial sensibility.
Aslı Yılmaztürk (1987–2021) was a Turkish creative director, visual designer, curator, and digital art entrepreneur best known as the founder of the influential art-and-design platform Artsxdesign (AXD).
In 2008, while still young, Aslı launched AXD as a personal blog curating art, fashion, and design imagery and commentary. Over time the platform gained international visibility, especially after she expanded it to social media (notably Instagram) around 2015.
By 2015 she had transformed AXD into a creative business model and global platform connecting digital audiences with real-world artistic collaborations. Her stated aim was to build an “international platform” linking online visual culture with physical artistic production and events.
Her projects often explored themes such as freedom, illusion, and lightness through contemporary materials and brand objects. She transformed the Nike Air VaporMax sneaker into sculptural installations and visual artworks; her “Defying Gravity” series was exhibited in museum-like contexts.
These activities positioned her among a new generation of digitally native art curators emerging from social media culture. Her work has been described as a practice situated “between analog and digital worlds,” reflecting the hybrid nature of contemporary visual culture.
In years ArtsxDesign gradually followed by hundreds thousands of creativity seeking, difference enthusiast audience and it became a tastemaker & trendsetter power among this targeted mass.
Aslı’s curatorial eye drew from a wide range of sources—vintage fashion editorials, surrealist art, contemporary photography, and global design. She frequently researched diverse visual archives to shape AXD’s distinctive aesthetic language.
Aslı died in 2021 at age 33. Her early death prompted widespread tributes in Turkey’s art, design, and fashion communities.
Despite her short life, Aslı is remembered as a pioneer of social-media-driven art curation in Turkey, a bridge between global brands and contemporary art practice and founder of one of Turkey’s most visible digital art platforms
Artsxdesign continues to be cited as an early example of how independent curators used digital platforms to shape global visual culture in the 2010s.
